Artist Statement
Hebe Wohlrab is a contemporary multidisciplinary artist based between London and Gibraltar. Her practice investigates the layered experiences of femininity, drawing on personal memory and cultural observation. Through a blend of irony and uneasy beauty, she reflects on the tensions between self-image, societal expectation, and the rituals of coming of age. Engaging with transformation and in-between states, her work moves through themes of glamour, vulnerability, and contradiction. With a focus on subtle provocation, Hebe’s pieces form an ongoing visual inquiry into the performative and often paradoxical nature of womanhood.
In her recent works, Watch Me as I Melt and Chantal’s Liquid Crystal Display, Wohlrab explores the reduction of the self to a visual veneer. These pieces feature surreal, melting figures that morph into luxury goods and technologically automated forms, blurring the boundaries between the organic and the artificial. Originally trained as a painter, she now employs 3D technologies to create self-portraits and sculptures that examine the collusion of survival and demise.
Through this lens, Wohlrab’s art becomes both personal and political, exposing the structural conditions that entrap the feminine experience while refusing easy conclusions.
