Artist statement

Hebe Wohlrab is a contemporary multimedia artist based in London and Gibraltar. Her practice bluntly deconstructs her singular experience of hyper sexualisation and the need for external validation. Recognising the collective dimension of this issue, she situates it within a broader cultural framework. Interrogating the forces that shape these dynamics — from the commodification of identity and the body, to the early priming of children by the image-making industry.

She explores the reduction of the self to a visual veneer of skin and stereotypes, using these associations in her most recent works; Watch Me as I Melt, and Chantal’s Liquid Crystal Display, focusing on surreal melting figures morphing into luxury goods and something technologically automated. Originally a painter, now employing 3D technologies, she creates self portraits and sculptures based on the collusion of survival and demise.

Through this lens, Wohlrab’s art becomes both personal and political, exposing the structural conditions that entrap the feminine experience while refusing easy conclusions.
